Open Media Network: Oh so Closed

The Open Media Network announced a Kontiki-powered P2P network for public TV and radio. Let's parse this.

This CNET article touted the:

TV-like program directory

That's because unlike public P2P networks with billions of files this network will have so few files that they can be listed in directories. No need for search. ... Oh so Appealing.

The best line in the article.

A Kontiki rival, Red Swoosh, has also previously offered to let noncommercial Web publishers take advantage of its peer-to-peer-based content-delivery services for free.

... Oh so New. But at least OMN has big names in Mike homerlinks and Marc Andreessen.

Then there is the name itself - OPEN Media Network. Let's get this straight - proprietary P2P network, proprietary client, filtered results. ... You got it. Oh so Closed.

Such entertainment-engineered networks are not oriented to consumers or the real world. They still don't get that there is an entertainment glut, not scarcity. And the consumer is in control not Hollywood. Limited inventory, low value content, no incentives to share, software that you have to download, and content that likely will still be DRM'd.. ... Oh such a Winner! ... But it's nice PR.
