P2P Botnets

P2P Botnets

Just as the centrally based botnets are being taken down by authorities, new peer to peer (P2P) botnets are popping up to replace them. In P2P botnets, each bot, or infected machine, contains additional code that allows it to pass along instructional information.

These networks will be very hard to take down, because no central command is needed. Instructions are fed to just one or two members of the network, and these will pass them along to others, and the process continues until the whole network has been updated and is working as one. In a modified configuration of the P2P botnet, it can set itself up into a hierarchy with instructions coming only from a computer higher up in the hierarchy. This kind of structure would overcome some of the technical difficulties that botnet builders have faced in the past.
