Some SonyBMG CDs now come with copy protection technology first developed by spyware and virus programmers to hide malicious code. The software from First4Internet installs without clear notice. It cannot be detected or removed. Users have to know about the rootkit, find a reference to uninstalling software on a SonyBMG page, and then contact SonyBMG via a web form to request instructions.
The technology is called a rootkit. Its usage with SonyBMG music was first documented by developer Mark Russinovich. Microsoft has warned on the use of rootkits that are virtually impossible to detect and remove.
