MPAA at it again.

Not content with threatening a load of students with massive fines right before their exams, the MPAA have come up with a new idea to try and cut piracy on campus, by installing a rootki-, whoops, "toolkit" onto every internet user's PC. Already sounding dubious without explanation, the MPAA does not do well by out right lying about the roo.... toolkit's "features", which are on the list below, with statements about their validity next to them.

# Creates a simple graphical report on the extent of file sharing occurring within the campus network.
# The University toolkit does not identify infringements.
# No privacy issues - the content of traffic is never examined or displayed. LIE: Another statement says that it can be analyzed and collected, contradiction, no?
# It does not communicate results to the MPAA. - LIE: The system connects to the MPAA to update every day, while giving away your IP address.
# Requires minimal effort from IT staff..
# Access to NTop and snort data for detailed analysis..

Of course the MPAA say this is purely a helpful tool with no malicious intent, but the end users will be the judge of that. I wonder if any Uni will actually implement this system?
