...of course, it didn't cost the people $1,000,000 to get the leaked files...it cost MediaDefender that much in legal and other damages related to the leak.
Apparently they had to refund their 4 affected customers massive amounts of money, as the leaked emails contained a database full of fake hashes for their "copy protection", which consisted of uploading and sharing fake versions of files, trying to entice people to download them before legally smashing them.
Kind of serves them right for such a decietful method of law enforcement, doesn't it? I'll leave that decision up to you.
