Speakers reinforced the evidence that P2P network use continues to rise despite recording industry actions against both software developers and consumers. Speakers called for certification or permission-based authentication system for approved file sharing that would be interoperable with multiple platforms. John Desmond, VP of MediaSentry Services said "We estimate there are 6 million users on BitTorrent at any one time, triple from about a year ago. You're also seeing a shift to open source and that would explain the rise in BitTorrent."
