The U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 4098, a bill that would ban federal employees from using P2P software.
"Rep. Edophus Towns, D-N.Y., introduced HR 4098 after several publicized information breaches involving peer-to-peer programs last year," writes Federal Times' Rebecca Neal. "In one case, confidential House Ethics Committee investigation documents were posted online after a staffer loaded the documents onto her personal computer which had peer-to-peer sharing software installed."
"The bill would also require the Office of Management and Budget to approve legitimate uses of P2P software on a case-by-case basis and annually provide Congress with a list of agencies that are using such software and the reasons for doing so," writes Federal Computer Week's Doug Beizer.
"We can no longer ignore the threat to sensitive government information, businesses and consumers that insecure peer-to-peer networks pose," says Rep. Towns. "Securing federal computer files is critical to our national security."
